KDP trim sizes, minus the Word wrestling
Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) prints your paperback at the exact trim size you choose — the finished page dimensions after binding and trimming. Pick the wrong page size in your PDF and KDP's uploader rejects it, or worse, prints with text running into the gutter. The most popular trade paperback trim is 6″ × 9″ (6x9), with 5″ × 8″ for shorter fiction and 8.5″ × 11″ for workbooks and manuals.
This converter takes your existing manuscript PDF — whatever page size it is now — and re-pages it into your chosen KDP trim, applying KDP's official minimum inside (gutter) margins for your page count. Everything runs in your browser; your manuscript never uploads anywhere.
An honest note on what this tool does: it scales each manuscript page into the KDP trim box with correct margins — it does not re-flow or re-typeset your text (that needs Word or InDesign). For a finished manuscript this gets you a correctly-sized, correctly-margined PDF in seconds. Always run the final file through KDP's own previewer before approving your proof.
Official KDP trim sizes at a glance
| Trim size | Best for |
|---|---|
| 5″ × 8″ | Short fiction, poetry, novellas |
| 5.5″ × 8.5″ | General fiction and narrative nonfiction |
| 6″ × 9″ | Most popular trade paperback — novels, memoir, general nonfiction |
| 7″ × 10″ | Textbooks, references, guides |
| 8.5″ × 11″ | Workbooks, activity books, manuals |
KDP's inside (gutter) margin table
KDP raises the minimum inside margin as the book gets thicker — the spine needs more room. This tool applies these automatically from your page count:
| Page count | Inside (gutter) margin | Outside / top / bottom (no bleed) |
|---|---|---|
| 24–150 | 0.375″ (9.6 mm) | 0.25″ min |
| 151–300 | 0.5″ (12.7 mm) | 0.25″ min |
| 301–500 | 0.625″ (15.9 mm) | 0.25″ min |
| 501–700 | 0.75″ (19.1 mm) | 0.25″ min |
| 701–828 | 0.875″ (22.3 mm) | 0.25″ min |

How to use this converter
- Step 1. Upload your manuscript PDF — click the box or drag the file in.
- Step 2. Pick your KDP trim size. 6″ × 9″ is the safe default for most books.
- Step 3. Enter your final page count so the inside margin matches KDP's table.
- Step 4. Choose bleed only if images or backgrounds intentionally reach the page edge.
- Step 5. Download the re-paged PDF and check it in KDP's previewer.
Real-world use cases
- Word manuscript to KDP trim — exported your novel on US Letter? Re-page to 6″ × 9″ with correct gutters in one click.
- Trim-size switch mid-project — decided 5″ × 8″ fits your poetry collection better? Re-page without rebuilding the document.
- Low-content books — journals and planners formatted at 8.5″ × 11″ need exact pages; this keeps every page identical.
- Proof-copy iteration — fix the page size once, re-upload to KDP, order a fresh proof.
Tips
- Lock trim size before final edits. Changing trim later re-flows nothing here (pages scale), so pick it early in your real layout tool.
- No bleed for text-only books. Bleed adds 0.125″ to the width and 0.25″ to the height — only choose it if artwork bleeds off the edge.
- Embed your fonts. KDP requires embedded fonts; most PDF exporters do this by default — check your export settings.
- Keep body text 10–12pt. KDP's 7pt minimum is a production floor, not a comfortable reading size.
- Always use KDP's previewer last. This tool gets the geometry right; the previewer catches everything else before you approve the proof.

Is KDP Trim-Size Converter free to use without signup?

What is a KDP trim size?
The finished page dimensions of your printed paperback after binding and trimming — e.g. 6×9 inches. Amazon KDP prints exactly the page size in your PDF, so the PDF's pages must match the trim size you selected in your KDP bookshelf.
Which KDP trim size should I choose?
6×9 inches is the most popular trade paperback size and a safe default for novels, memoir and general nonfiction. 5×8 suits shorter fiction and poetry; 8.5×11 fits workbooks and manuals. Match the trim to what similar books in your category use.
Does this tool reflow my text to the new trim size?
No — and this matters. It scales each manuscript page into the KDP trim box with KDP's official margins applied; it does not re-typeset or re-flow text like Word or InDesign would. For a finished manuscript it produces a correctly-sized, correctly-margined PDF in seconds.
What are KDP's margin requirements?
The inside (gutter) margin depends on page count: 0.375in for 24–150 pages, 0.5in for 151–300, 0.625in for 301–500, 0.75in for 501–700, and 0.875in for 701–828 pages. Outside, top and bottom margins must be at least 0.25in (0.375in with bleed). This tool applies them automatically.
Do I need bleed for my KDP interior?
Only if images, backgrounds or design elements intentionally run off the page edge. Text-only books should use no bleed. With bleed, add 0.125in to the page width and 0.25in to the height — the tool handles that when you select the with-bleed option.
Will KDP accept the PDF this tool makes?
It produces a PDF with the correct page size and KDP-minimum margins, which covers the most common geometry rejections. But KDP also checks fonts (must be embedded), image resolution and content — always run the final file through KDP's own previewer before approving your proof. No tool can guarantee KDP approval.
Does this tool upload my manuscript anywhere?
No. Re-pagination happens entirely in your browser — your manuscript never leaves your device, which matters for unpublished work.
Can I convert an ebook cover with this tool?
No — covers are a separate file with spine math based on page count. This tool handles the interior manuscript only.
What page sizes can I upload?
Any — US Letter, A4, or whatever your manuscript currently uses. Every page is scaled proportionally into the chosen trim box, so nothing gets stretched or distorted.
Why does my page count matter for margins?
Thicker books need a wider gutter so text near the spine stays readable after binding. KDP's minimum inside margin grows with page count, which is why the tool asks for it.
Is 6×9 really the best trim size?
It's the most common US trade paperback size and KDP's default recommendation for general books — readers expect it and it keeps print costs predictable. Niche genres (poetry, workbooks, children's books) have their own conventions; check comparable titles.
My PDF has different page sizes mixed together — what happens?
Each page is scaled independently into the trim box, so mixed-size sources still come out uniform. For best results, export your manuscript at one consistent page size first.
