Instagram rewards exact sizes
Instagram does not ask what size your photo is — it decides for you, cropping and compressing uploads to fit its slots. A photo uploaded at the wrong size gets auto-cropped (goodbye, edges) and then re-compressed (hello, artifacts).
Uploading at Instagram's native sizes flips the control back to you: 1080×1080 for square posts, 1080×1350 for portraits, 1080×1920 for stories and reels. This page pre-sets the classic 1080×1080 — type the others into the boxes as needed — so what you upload is exactly what your followers see.
Tips
- 1080×1080 is pre-set. The classic square post size — change the boxes to 1080×1350 for portraits or 1080×1920 for stories and reels.
- Crop before resizing. Frame your shot with the crop tool first, then resize — resizing will not fix bad composition.
- Instagram still compresses. Uploading at native size minimizes Instagram's re-compression damage, but some always happens — start from the highest quality you have.
- Keep the aspect lock on. For square posts from non-square photos, “Crop to fill” trims the edges automatically so nothing looks stretched.
- sRGB is safest. Most exports already are — it keeps colors consistent between your editor and the Instagram app.
