Cut wide PDF pages in half: A3 scans become two A4 pages

Some documents arrive too wide for their own good: an A3 drawing scanned as one landscape page, a two-page magazine spread captured as a single image, a ledger sheet that's really two A4 pages side by side. Splitting PDF pages in half cuts each page along its middle — vertically into left and right halves, or horizontally into top and bottom — so every wide page becomes two normal, printable, readable pages. Split PDF pages in half: the step-by-step A3-to-A4 guide

5. Run the split on all pages. Apply the cut to every page, or to a page range if only part of the document is oversized. A 50-page A3 scan becomes a 100-page A4 document.
6. Download and verify printability. Open the result, check that page size now reads A4, and print one sheet. The two halves should read as natural consecutive pages — which, for a spread scan, is exactly what they are.

Where splitting pages in half saves the day

A3 drawings to A4 prints. An architect's office scans site plans at A3 but the site cabin only has an A4 printer. Splitting each drawing into two A4 halves lets the crew print and tape the sheets together — the standard field workaround, now without a trip back to the office.

Pro tips for clean page splits

• Cut in the gutter, never through text. The golden rule: the split line must fall in blank space between columns or pages. Preview every distinct layout in the document — if page 12 has a full-width diagram, a centered cut will slice it in half. Exclude such pages from the range and handle them separately.
• Fix skew before splitting. If the scan is even slightly rotated, a vertical cut drifts across the page and nibbles text on one side while leaving a sliver of the neighbor on the other. Deskew first, then split — the order matters.
• A3 to A4 is exactly a middle cut — trust the math. A3 (420×297mm) is literally two A4 sheets side by side, so the default centered vertical cut on a landscape A3 page produces two true A4 pages. Don't eyeball it; the exact middle is the correct answer here.
• Watch the new page order. After splitting, the left half becomes page N and the right half page N+1. For spread scans that's correct reading order. But if your source was right-to-left material (Arabic, Hebrew books), you may need to swap the halves with an organize-pages step afterward.

Split landscape PDF pages vertically or horizontally?

Match the cut to the page's long axis logic: landscape pages (wider than tall) almost always want a vertical cut into left and right halves — that's the A3 scan and the book spread. Portrait pages that are unusually tall want a horizontal cut into top and bottom — that's the folded receipt and the stacked scan. When in doubt, look at where the content's natural gutter runs: the cut follows the gutter.

Does splitting a PDF page in half reduce quality?

No. The operation divides page boundaries; it doesn't re-render, downscale, or recompress anything. A 300-DPI scan split in half yields two 300-DPI halves. Text remains real, selectable text — not converted to images — so search and copy-paste keep working across the split.

How many pages will the output have?

Exactly double the input page count when every page is split: 25 wide pages become 50 normal pages. If you split only a page range — say pages 5–20 of a mixed document — the output is the original count plus the number of split pages. Either way, each new page is a proper standalone page at the target size.

Wide pages are a scanning artifact, not a document design choice. Cut them where the fold would be, and the document finally behaves like the normal pages it was always meant to be.
