Why 600×600 pixels?
US online systems don’t ask for inches — they ask for pixels. The DS-160 visa application and the Diversity Visa lottery require a digital photo of at least 600×600 px (maximum 1200×1200 px), in JPEG format. 600×600 is the safe universal minimum every system accepts.
Diversity Visa entries add one more rule: the file must be 240KB or smaller. If your resized photo is heavier, run it through a 100KB compressor afterwards — same dimensions, smaller file.
Tips
- JPEG for uploads. This tool saves photos as high-quality JPEG automatically — exactly what DS-160 and DV systems expect.
- Watch the 240KB DV limit. After resizing, check the file size. If it exceeds 240KB, compress it — the dimensions stay 600×600.
- Square crop first. Crop to a square with your face centered before resizing, so nothing important gets squeezed.
- Head 50–69% of the frame. US digital rules mirror the print rules: head height 50–69% of the image, eyes in the upper half.
- Use a recent photo. US systems require a photo taken within the last 6 months that reflects your current appearance.
