Canada’s 50×70mm rule, explained
Unlike most countries, Canada requires passport photos of 50mm wide × 70mm high (2 × 2¾ inches), per the official canada.ca photo specifications. Your face must measure 31–36mm from chin to crown — roughly 65–75% of the frame. At 300 DPI print resolution, that equals 591×827 pixels.
One honest note: IRCC requires the submitted photo to be taken and printed by a commercial photographer or studio. This tool gets your digital dimensions exactly right for preparation — the final print still needs a studio’s stamp and signature on the back per IRCC rules.
Tips
- Don’t use 35×45mm. The most common mistake — 35×45mm is too small for Canada and will be rejected. This page uses the correct 50×70mm.
- Face 31–36mm chin to crown. Frame so your face fills about two-thirds of the height — measure roughly before resizing.
- Plain white background. IRCC wants plain white or light-coloured with clear contrast between face and background.
- Studio print required. IRCC does not accept home prints — get the final photo printed and stamped by a photo studio.
- Neutral expression, eyes open. Mouth closed, no smiling, face squared to the camera.
