The US 2×2 inch standard, explained
The US Department of State requires a 2×2 inch (51×51mm) square photo for passports, visas and the Diversity Visa (green card) lottery. At standard print resolution (300 DPI), that equals exactly 600×600 pixels — which is what this page pre-sets.
One honest note: this tool resizes your photo to the correct dimensions — it does not change backgrounds, lighting or face positioning. US rules are strict: plain white background, neutral expression, no glasses. Start with a straight-on, well-lit photo against a white wall, crop it roughly square, then resize here to the exact size.
Tips
- Square framing first. Crop your photo to a square with your head centered before resizing — the tool sets dimensions, not composition.
- White background only. The US requires a plain white or off-white background. This tool cannot replace backgrounds, so start with one.
- No glasses. US passport and visa photos do not allow eyeglasses (rare medical exceptions aside) — take the photo without them.
- Head size matters. Your head should measure 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35mm) chin-to-crown — roughly 50–69% of the frame height.
- Print at exactly 2×2 in. The pixel math assumes 300 DPI. Ask the print shop for a 2×2 inch print at actual size.
