When JPG to PNG makes sense
Let us be honest first: converting JPG to PNG does not improve quality. JPEG compression discards detail permanently, and PNG can only preserve what is left — in a bigger file. So why do it?
Because some workflows require PNG regardless. Lossless editing pipelines, design tools and print workflows often standardize on PNG. Some upload forms and older software accept PNG but not JPG. And if you plan to edit, annotate or composite the image further, PNG stops the quality from degrading with each save — JPG would keep losing a little more every time.
Tips
- Do not expect better quality. The PNG will look identical to the JPG — the win is lossless future edits, not restoration.
- Expect a bigger file. PNG is lossless, so the output is usually several times larger than the JPG. That is normal and correct.
- Quality slider does nothing for PNG. PNG output is always lossless, so the quality control is hidden — there is nothing to tune.
- Need transparency? It will not appear. A JPG has no alpha channel, so the PNG gets a solid background. Transparency must come from the source.
