Why PNGs are so heavy

PNG is a lossless format — it preserves every pixel perfectly, and charges you for it. A PNG screenshot can easily weigh 2–5MB where an equivalent JPEG would be 200KB. For photos and complex images, that precision is pure overhead: your eyes cannot see the difference, but your email server and your visitors' data plans certainly feel it.

This tool compresses PNGs by converting them to efficient JPEG (or WebP) at a smart quality setting. The visual result is virtually identical for photos and screenshots, at a tenth of the size. One honest trade-off: PNG transparency becomes white, so keep true logos and icons as PNG.

Tips

  • Know when PNG should stay PNG. Logos, icons and graphics with transparency should remain PNG. Photos, screenshots and complex graphics should almost always be compressed to JPEG.
  • Transparency becomes white. The tool flattens transparent areas to white when converting — check the preview if your PNG has an alpha channel.
  • Screenshots love this tool. A 3MB PNG screenshot typically lands under 300KB as JPEG with zero readable difference.
  • Try WebP output too. WebP keeps transparency and compresses better than PNG — the best of both when your platform supports it.

Common uses

  • PNG screenshots — documentation and bug reports that attach in seconds.
  • Exported graphics — design exports saved as PNG out of habit.
  • Web images — lighter pages without visible quality loss.
  • Email graphics — charts and captures that do not bloat inboxes.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my PNG file so large?

PNG is lossless — it stores every pixel perfectly, which costs 5–10x more bytes than JPEG for photos and screenshots. Unless you need transparency or pixel-perfect lines, that weight is wasted.

Will I lose transparency?

When compressing to JPEG, yes — transparent areas become white, and the tool tells you so. If you need to keep transparency, convert to WebP instead, which supports alpha and still compresses far better than PNG.

Will a PNG screenshot still look sharp as JPEG?

Yes for all practical purposes. Text in screenshots stays crisp at sensible quality settings — preview the result and zoom into small text to confirm.

Can I keep it as PNG but smaller?

This tool converts PNG to JPEG/WebP for maximum savings, since that is where the 90% reductions come from. For photos and screenshots the visual difference is negligible.

Is WebP better than JPEG for compressed PNGs?

Usually yes — WebP is 25–35% smaller than JPEG at equal quality and keeps transparency. Choose JPEG only when you need the widest possible compatibility.
