NEET photo specifications, explained
Every year, over 22 lakh students apply for NEET UG, and every year a chunk of them hit the same wall: "photo rejected". NTA's portal validates uploads automatically, and it is strict about two things — file size bands and format. Get those right and most rejections disappear. Here are the published specs this tool implements:
| Document | Format | Size | Notes |
| Passport photo | JPG | 10–200 KB | White background, ~80% face, ears visible, recent |
| Postcard photo (4×6 in) | JPG | 10–200 KB | 2:3 ratio, same face/background rules |
| Signature | JPG | 4–30 KB* | Running hand, black ink, no capitals |
| Thumb impression (L & R) | JPG | 10–200 KB | Blue ink on white paper |
*Signature band conflict, disclosed honestly: most published sources (Careers360, KollegeApply, Unacademy, NEET bulletin guides) list the signature at 4–30 KB; one publisher (CollegeDunia) quotes 10–100 KB. This tool uses the majority spec (4–30 KB) — but verify against your current NTA notification, since specs change every cycle.
What NTA does not specify
Worth saying plainly: NTA publishes KB bands, not exact pixels (the postcard's 4×6 inches is a print size). Any tool promising "exact NTA pixels" is inventing a spec. This tool keeps your image's natural dimensions, crops the postcard to the 2:3 print ratio, and does the real work — landing the file inside the KB band as a genuine JPG.
How the KB fitting works
JPEG quality is binary-searched until the file lands inside the band — typically 8 encode attempts, all on your device. Two honest edge cases: if your file is under the minimum (portals reject those too), the tool enlarges it in disclosed steps up to 4× with real pixels — never fake padding bytes — and tells you; if even that fails, it says so instead of faking compliance.
Photo rules that actually get checked
Beyond KB and format: white background (the tool samples your photo's edges and warns if it doesn't look white), ~80% face coverage with ears visible, and a recent photograph (recent-cycle guides specify taken after 1 January of the application year). The tool can check tone, not face coverage — frame yourself properly when shooting.
Signature rules
Sign in running handwriting with black ink on white paper — signatures in capital letters are rejected. Scan or photograph it straight, without shadows; the tool fits it into the 4–30 KB band.
Thumb impressions
NTA asks for left and right thumb impressions in blue ink on white paper, each 10–200 KB. This tool processes one image per run — run it twice, once per hand, and keep the files labeled.
Common rejection reasons (and fixes)
- Wrong KB: the #1 cause — fixed by the tool's quality search.
- Wrong format: PNG/HEIC uploads get rejected; the tool always outputs JPG.
- Non-white background: flagged by the background check; retake against a plain white wall.
- Old or blurry photo: no tool can fix this — get a fresh, sharp photo.
- Name mismatch: not an image issue, but the other classic rejection — match your Class 10 certificate exactly.
The bottom line
Four documents, four KB bands, one honest fitter. Prepare them here, verify against the current NTA notification, and upload with confidence.
