Why 1080×1920 is the Story standard
1080×1920 is Instagram’s native Story resolution: the 9:16 vertical ratio that fills a phone screen edge to edge. Upload anything else and Instagram scales and crops it on its own terms — often cutting off text or faces at the worst possible moment.
Resize to exactly 1080×1920 here and your Story goes up pixel-perfect. Design with the safe zones in mind: keep key text and faces inside the central band, away from the top (profile bar) and bottom (reply field) edges where Instagram overlays its own UI.
Tips for Stories that get watched
- Crop to fill keeps faces natural. If your photo is not 9:16, the default crop trims edges instead of squishing faces — or crop to 9:16 yourself first for full control over what gets cut.
- Respect the safe zones. Keep text and faces in the middle ~70% of the frame. Instagram covers roughly the top 250px and bottom 350px with its own interface.
- Design text huge. Stories are watched at arm’s length on phones — captions under 60px tall get skipped. Big, bold, high-contrast wins.
- JPG for photos, PNG for graphics. Photos compress beautifully as JPG at 1080×1920; graphics with text and flat colors stay sharper as PNG.
- Watch the file size. Stories over ~30MB can stall on slow connections — if yours is heavy, run it through compress to 1MB first.
