Why 400×400 is the LinkedIn standard
400×400 pixels is LinkedIn's official profile photo specification: a square image, displayed in a circle at roughly 300px across. Recruiters, clients and colleagues see that small circle everywhere — in search results, comments, messages — so the source needs to be sharp enough to survive LinkedIn's re-compression and still look professional at a glance.
Uploading at exactly 400×400 means LinkedIn barely has to touch your photo: no aggressive downscaling, no surprise re-crops. The preview here is what the world sees.
Tips for a profile photo that works
- Face fills ~60% of the frame. LinkedIn crops the square into a circle — keep your face centered with a little headroom so nothing important lands in the clipped corners.
- Start from the highest quality. LinkedIn compresses every upload. A crisp 400×400 source survives that second compression; a blurry 200px source does not.
- Plain background wins. A clean, uncluttered background keeps attention on your face and reads well at tiny sizes.
- Crop before resizing. Frame a tight headshot with the crop tool first, then resize to 400×400 — the result looks like a deliberate portrait, not a shrunk group photo.
- JPG is all you need. At 400×400 a quality JPG looks identical to PNG for headshots, at a fraction of the file size.
