Why 820×312 is the Facebook standard
820×312 pixels is Facebook's official cover photo size on desktop — a wide panoramic strip that sits above your page or profile. Upload anything else and Facebook scales it to fit, which is the number-one cause of blurry, soft covers: your image gets resized twice, once by you and once by Facebook.
One important catch: on phones the same cover displays at 640×360, cropped from the sides. So design for 820×312 but keep the important stuff — faces, text, logos — in the middle band that survives the mobile crop.
Tips for a sharp Facebook cover
- Respect the safe zone. Keep text and logos in the central ~640px. The left and right edges vanish on phones — this is where most ruined covers go wrong.
- PNG for graphics, JPG for photos. Covers with text or logos stay sharper as PNG; photographic covers are fine as much smaller JPGs.
- Go 2× for extra sharpness. Designing at 1640×624 then letting Facebook downscale produces noticeably crisper results on high-DPI screens — type it into the dimension boxes here.
- Crop to fill, never stretch. The default crop trims edges instead of squishing your design — or compose the 820:312 crop yourself first for full control.
